What’s great about my pets?
Are my pets heroes?
There’s an awesome contest going on now and I want to submit my story or fabulous video all about how my pet is a hero. Problem is, I can’t think of one good reason any of my pets would be considered heroes. Rascal bit me on the nose the other morning just to get me out of bed. He sees me as his personal servant and I should be at his beck and call all hours of the day and night. Rocco usually will have nothing to do with me. He is a daddy’s boy and only curls up with me when he has no other option. They spend most of their time out of the house or sleeping.
Max does fearlessly protect the house from the evil doorbell by barking, but other than that, he pretty much naps the days away when we don’t drag him outside or coerce him to play with his dog toys.
I have had pets in the past who were literal heroes. A dog that saved my brother’s life as a toddler by pinning him down until our parents could find him. A cat that warned us of an earthquake about to happen by running back and forth like a crazed animal (which he was at the moment). But, my current boys, I can’t say that they are heroes.
However…
now that I think of it, despite their laziness and snobbery, they have helped me through some very hard times. It’s uncanny how they know when something is wrong. They always know when to snuggle up and press a nose into my palm. They know I will pet them and that calming motion will begin to make me feel better. The cats’ purrs help me relax, like a massage, after a tense day. The dog’s big eyes look up at me, saying, “it’s okay”.
For a few minutes I can live in that moment of love and warmth, surrounded by caring creatures. Then Rascal is up on a shelf knocking things over, and Rocco has his paw in my water glass again. They must know then is the best time to exercise my sense of humor.
I guess, in this humble way, they are heroes. At least to me. They keep life interesting, they don’t let me stay blue for long, and they bring much joy to all in my family.
No matter how they treat me, I love them and want the very best for them. I make sure the food I provide is quality, healthy natural cat food and natural dog food.

Rascal loved the food a little too much. He scarfed it down and didn’t save a single bit for his brother. Don’t worry, I gave Rocco his own serving while Rascal was out. Max got some nummies, too.

I’m going to be evaluated as a therapy cat in the spring, so I hope to be a hero someday.
We think you’re already a hero, Summer!
