Is Your Pet Excessively “Fluffy”? #HillsPet

March 21, 2014 by L. E. Mastilock

Is your pet excessively "fluffy"? #HillsPet #Catfood #dogfood #Giveaway

Have you noticed your cat has a bit more poof than may be healthy? Or
has your dog grown around the middle and lost that energy she used to have?

Fat cats and rolls on the dog may be adorable, but can lead to serious health issues and effect your pets quality of life. Even if you don’t see rolls around the
middle, a little bit of excess can have large effects on small animals.
So, where are those diets for dogs or cat weight loss programs? Are there pet gyms where our overweight dogs and overweight cats trot on the treadmill and then soak in the sauna with their furry buds for an hour? Not in my neighborhood, but there are healthy pet food options to get our beloved pets healthier.

Get a free cat food or dog food weight loss and management starter pack!
Giveaway details at the end of this post.

Rascal and Rocco would never admit it, but they were quite, well, robust, when I adopted them.

You could say there was more of them to love.

Rocco especially. He was so big he broke the shelf my husband mounted on the back fence for them. Embarrassing!

With healthier food and lots more exercise, once they were outside of the shelter, they thinned down to a healthy weight.

How do you know if your pet is overweight?

In the US, 53% of dogs and 55% of cats are now overweight or obese.
In the last 5 years number of overweight  dogs has increased by almost 40% and overweight cats by 90%!
-Klausner JS, Lund E. Banfi eld Pet Hospital State of Pet Health 2012, 2012.

You may not be aware that your pet is considered overweight! It’s worth looking into.

If you can’t feel their ribs, or hardly feel them at all, that’s a good indicator that they may be too fat. Check with your vet. They can best assess if you have an overweight cat or dog and rule out any other medical conditions.

What in the world to do about it?

1. Try for more exercise, though this can be difficult, even impossible, for cat owners. Have a peak at this funny cat video and see if it rings true for you and your pet!

2. Avoid unhealthy snacks and cut back on treats; 8 Common Snacks That Will Prompt a Portly Pet

3. Give healthy food in correct portions. There are many healthy options now, but to get weight loss started fast and keep a healthy weight, give the new Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution a try.

What’s the difference from other weight loss management pet foods?

The Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution not only gets the excess weight off, you don’t have to switch foods to keep it off!

They offer a complete line of dry food, canned food, and treats (yep, you can still treat your pet!).

Here are some findings from a blind test (participants didn’t know what brand it was) of over 300 pet parents who tried Hills Prescription Diet Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution in their own homes:

– Without strict protocols or precise measuring, 88% of pets lost weight in two months at home.
– 8 out of 10 pet parents told us they would recommend Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution to a friend with an overweight pet.
– 100% guaranteed great taste

We don't have any pets, so I didn't even realize there was weight management for pets, that's great!

Fun video! We have 2 cats, and one of them is slightly overweight and has been since we got her. She exercises enough because she never walks if she can run! I'm not sure how it would work feeding her a different diet, since both cats eat from the same bowls and her son is on the skinny side! But I might look into this food and see if it's available in the UK.

I wish I could send you one. If it's not there yet, it probably will be eventually if you have other Hills brands over there. You may have to start feeding her in a different room

Ah very timely. We have fought the weight monster since learning in December that Toby had gained 8 pounds in 6 months! I've been documenting it on the blog. We are using all 3 of your strategies – more exercise, a 'healthy weight' diet (though not Hills), and changing the amt. and type of treats- we learned that Toby can enjoy baby carrots and raw or canned green beans as treats. Also weigh-ins at the vet twice a month,a luxury we can do because our daughter works there. We are slowly but surely seeing success. In fact he is WAY more successful that me, I've been trying to lose the same five pounds for years now LOL.

Pets are faster at pretty much everything. Even losing weight! Those sound like some healthy treats. Glad you're taking such good care of Toby

I adopted a rather "fluffy" cat just over a year ago from the SPCA. She had spent two years in a shelter, and no one wanted to adopt her because she was too round. Yet being locked in a cage only made her more bored/stressed and eat more so it was pretty much a vicious circle. Since I took her home and started managing her diet, she lost seven pounds. And she's still a bit round… but definitely much better than she was.

It's a challenge though because I have to feed her in a separate room to keep her from snarfing down the food in the other cat's bowls and vice versa. Ah, the things we do for our kitties. Thanks for sharing the importance of keeping our kitties to a healthy weight.

That's surprising. I thought everyone loved a plump kitty cat. Glad she has a good home with someone who will take the time to make sure she's eating right, and not too much.

    I’d glad I don’t need a diet.

I do love the sight of an overweight pet, but keeping them healthy is more important of course.

I can't help smiling either when I see a big pudgy fur ball. But yes, health is more important.
