Have you heard of the Paw Project?
I’m joining Blog the Change today to spread the word about important issues.
Declawing cats used to be thought of as a good thing. No sharp claws, no one gets hurts. Except someone does get hurt. The cat who had no choice in having the ends of their toes amputated. That’s right, to declaw is actually to amputate of the end of the toes.
According to the Paw Project, “the
veterinarian cuts off the last knuckles of a cat’s paw – cutting
through bone, tendons, skin and nerves. In a person, it is equivalent to
amputating each finger or toe at the last joint.”
Not at all what I want when going in for a nail trim, myself!
You can read more facts about declawing on The Paws Project website and find out about this eye opening film. Also learn more where I first heard about this, over on Sparkle’s blog, who has already seen the film.

change-to right wrongs even when our elected representatives fail to do
so.”

Great post. I saw this film on Netflix recently and it was amazing. It's so great when animal causes really start to make a difference and this one seems to be doing just that.
I had no idea about the declawing but we did not have it done to our cats anyway. Our Vet didn't recommend it if you let your cat outside because they would be left defenseless. Since we lived out in the country with lots of other critters, this was not a good idea.
After reading that it is the equivelent of cutting to the knuckes, I cannot believe how popular it used to be. Poor cats … that is pretty extreme and painful to avoid a few scratches on your furniture. .
Thanks for raising awareness to this, I'm hoping that the practice will be abandoned as more people realize it's unnecessary.
Although it was acceptable decades ago, the times have changed as humans realize how very wrong declawing cats or cropping ears/docking tails truly is. Thanks for bringing this information to us.
I have NEVER been a fan of declawing cats! I think it is just so so so horrid!!

The idea of declawing makes me grit my teeth. I understand that people don't want their cats to destroy their furniture (I'm one of them) but that isn't the way to do it. Many declawed cats become aggressive because they've lost their principal means of self-defence. I'm glad there are organizations such as this to raise awareness. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely will watch this, thanks. Fellow shelter workers have discouraged adopters who say they MAY declaw a cat they adopt for reasons we've all heard. My moral dilemma is: what's worse, being declawed or not being adopted at all? I know of 1 older cat that almost had a home but the adopter was "discouraged" because she wanted to declaw. The cat sat in a cage for many weeks before finally getting ill and then being euthanized. I suggest alternatives; soft paws, multiple scratching posts, etc. but I don't discourage adoption of older cats because a person uses the "D" word. I hope others won't either. Kittens go fast, but older cats have a much harder time getting adopted, far too many are euthanized. Educate, but don't judge, don't discourage adoption. That's my motto, for what it's worth.

Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the Paw Project. I've not heard of the movie before now, but I definitely know how horrid de-clawing is. It is right up there with tail docking, which also is an amputation of a vital appendage of dogs. Both cuts through bone, tendons, nerves, and is excruciating. Just as some cats never recover from declawing, many dogs suffer for the rest of their lives from tail docking. I'm one of those dogs, and that is why it is my passion…to bring awareness about the painful truths of tail docking. I started "No Tail Left Behind" in 2012 and we are changing hearts and ending tail docking one person at a time.
It is so nice to meet you on this BtC4A blog hop, hope to see you soon!!

Thanks for the info! I'd love to share about that as well. I can't understand why people do such things to animals and think nothing of it. Just can't understand it.
The Paw Project (both the film and the whole movement) is so awesome! I'm so glad you are sharing about them.
it is also on Netflix!! 🙂
