Do Cats Have to Knead?

March 9, 2023 by L. E. Mastilock 5 Comments

Why do cats kneed? My kitty climbs up onto my lap, out come the cat claws, and then...

Killer Claws

No matter where I move, Rascal wants to be on me. Not just on me, but kneading me with his razor sharp claws that can penetrate the thickest jeans! And it doesn’t stop there! Oh no!

I’ve been trying to sit so as not to have any lap, you know, with my knees up to my chest and tangled like a pretzel, so there is no possible space he could fit in. But he finds a way to slither his body in, on, and around my legs, no matter how I’m sitting.

Or he’ll perch next to me and kneed my arm, or paw at me. Maybe just prick me with one claw extended. He is determined to have all my attention right now, so I must go, or there will be nothing left once he’s done with me!

Why do Cats Knead at all?

I searched around, but it seems no one knows the real reason. There are some interesting theories.

Here’s a short article that explains a few of those theories: Why do cats knead?

It would be cool to know why kitties knead for sure, but I think they like to remain mysterious.

Aaaaaaw Yous a blest purrson indeed. Mommy sez you can twain him not to use hims claws. Meez breed be soft pawed so it not be an issue, but meez not da furst massagin’ kitty mommy’s had. By da way, soft pawed means we don’t use our claws. Mommy sez da bestest way se’s found to train a kitty to not use their claws is to “whimper” when they stick you. When da kitty looks up tap their paws gently and say ouch. Yous gotta do it consistently and it won’t happen overnight, but when it duz, yous’ll get a wunnerful massage.

    Luv ya’

If Binga starts piercing my human with our claws, she gets a claw trim! That makes the kneading a little less painful for her. My claws are always short because of the shows I do.

I always loved when my cats kneaded me. I thought it just showed extreme love on their part. ♥

Rascal went out and it started snowing a little bit. He wasn't sure what was happening, but sure wanted back in quickly.
