Tell Congress You Care About Hens
Possibly the most abused farm animals, laying hens are often crammed into tiny cages to maximize profits with little thought to the birds’ quality of life. We can send congress a message now to help these animals and change the requirements by law.
“Factory farms cram egg-laying hens into cages so tiny they can’t even
spread their wings. Breeding pigs and veal calves are stuffed into
cramped individual cages barely larger than their bodies. They can’t
walk or turn around. But you can help free animals from these cruel
cages.” per the Humane Society of the United States.

will phase in significantly more space, plus environmental enrichments
for these birds so they can nest and perch. Additionally, it would
prohibit starving the birds to manipulate their laying cycle and ban
excess ammonia levels that cause respiratory problems, as well as give
consumers more information about farming methods right on the egg carton
(e.g., labeling “eggs from caged hens” and “eggs from cage-free hens”).
Cage free doesn’t necessarily mean cruelty free. It’s better, yes, but not what most people envision. http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2013/06/27/195639341/what-the-rise-of-cage-free-eggs-means-for-chickens
My own hens have a yard and house and a great life, but I only have eight and live in the city.
As someone who grew up on a chicken farm I really can't comment here…I will say that we were not a factory farm and our birds did not live in cages
I know there are many that care for their animals. I try to buy from free range farms.
This is really important stuff. Thank you so much for sharing, and calling folks to action. If we are not the change, who will be?
I totally agree!
So many farm animals are mistreated now that factory farms have become the norm. My uncle would be appalled, he was a an average dairy farmer (no factory farm) and treated his animals well. I'll be signing that petition. Thanks for sharing a great cause.
